Is it over for the romantic suspense novel?

Depending on who you ask, reader, publisher, author, agent, you'll get just as many different answers to the question.

But what I'm hearing from the publishing professionals, and by that I mean publishers and agents is that readers are not looking to buy romantic suspense as they used to. Which seems strange to me when such publishers as GCP, Forever, Harlequin and others are busily acquiring new romantic suspense novels.

Entangled Publishing has even devoted a complete line, Dead Sexy, to romantic suspense. It is headed by romantic suspense bestseller Nina Bruhns.

As an author of romantic suspense, and an avid reader of the genre, I have to say, I find this news troubling.

So I decided to do a digging on my own.

What do Sharon Sala, Catherine Coulter, Nora Roberts,  Lora Leigh, Nina Bruhns, Suzanne Brockman, Jane Ann Krentz, Karen Robards, and Lisa Gardner have in common? They have all been part of the New York Times Bestsellers list for their romantic suspense novels.

Romantic Times' readers choice best book awards for 2011 lists a total of nine romantic suspense novels in their readers choice winners.

Some of the top books on the USA Today's bestsellers lists are romantic suspense.

So I ask you what are your thoughts? Is romantic suspense taking a downturn, or is it growing stronger with each new year. For me, I can't wait to read the next romantic suspense bestseller!

A Tale As Old As Time

This weekened, I watched Beauty and The Beast with my granddaughter and fell in love with the timeless romance of the story all over again.

The storyline is classic. A beast too ugly for anyone to love. A beautiful woman who sees beyond the anger and the ugly to the real person inside.

This story took me back to my roots in writing. When I was a preteen, I started reading such classics as Wuthering Heights, Jane Eyre and later, Victoria Holt's, Mistress of Mellyn, On The Night Of The Seventh Moon, The King Of The Castle and others.

Whether or not the beast is the hero, or the heroine, at the heart of all these romance tales, is one person's ability to look beyond the beast and see the beauty within.

So, if you haven't seen Beauty And The Beast lately, I'd urge you to watch it again. It's a beautiful tale that will touch your heart. I think it's a lesson we can all learn from. And who knows, maybe your true love is just around the corner, waiting in the beast you know.

All the best...

A Sizzling Review of Killer Moves

From Stacey at Sizzling Hote Book Reviews-- Killer Moves really pulled just about everything together that I love in a book. Killer Moves is full of action and suspense, ties in with the paranormal, a serial killer, and a second chance at love. With so much going on, it’s amazing that Kara and Davis even have time for a little romance. Killer Moves comes so close to being one of the best books I’ve read in quite awhile. While I can’t tell you what made it drop a notch without giving away parts of the story, I can say that I really did enjoy Killer Moves and think you will too. The action and suspense will keep you turning each page of Killer Moves and waiting for the final culmination of events that is sure to knock your socks off.

The New Wild West – The Appeal of the Contemporary Western Romance

There’s just something about a cowboy isn’t there? Whether he’s riding across the hot open range or struggling to survive another winter in the mountains, I don’t know about you, but I’m a sucker for man in a cowboy hat. For some reason, when you mix together spirited heroine and a man in a Stetson, you have all the main ingredients for a great love story.

Today, there are contemporary western romances created to fit just about everyone’s taste, from Inspirational to Erotica.

The challenges facing the contemporary western author are not easy ones to overcome. First and foremost is to create a great love story fit to be included in the honored genre of western romance. To do this, the author must fulfill these three steps.

First, there must be an appealing backdrop for the story. Contemporary westerns can take place in the vast Southwest of Texas, Oklahoma or New Mexico, the rugged Rocky Mountains of Colorado, or the open majesty of Montana or Wyoming. That’s one of the great aspects of a contemporary western. It takes the reader to places some of us can only imagine. Whether it’s wide-open spaces or remote mountain terrain, survival for the hero and heroine can be as physical as the love stories themselves.

Second, the author must invent a love story worthy of being branded a western. In other words, there are some Texas-sized boots to fill (forgive the pun. I am a Texan at heart after all). The modern day western romance demands a story that will leave the reader wanting more.

And last, but never least, you need to have a hero and heroine the reader can fall in love with and wish they could step right in to the pages of the story and become part of the story, if only for a little while.

When it comes to great contemporary western romances, 2010 is filled with promise. This month, I’d like to take a look at just a few contemporary western romances I’ve fallen in love with. I hope you come away feeling the same way.

Branded As Trouble by Lorelei James, Samhain Publishing

This is book 6 in the Rough Riders series.

ISBN: 978-1605042992

It’s hard to trust the future when you’ve been branded by the past.

As a walking advertisement for the tattoo shop she’s set up in a small Wyoming town, India Ellison is well acquainted with preconceived notions. Despite the odd looks and off-color comments about her off-color hair, life is good. She’s clean and sober, dotes on her sister’s kids and, best of all, spends most of her free time with her best buddy, cowboy Colt McKay.

After an unexpected, steamy interlude, all India can think about is riding the sexy cowboy instead of her motorcycle, even when Colt is determined to show her a slower ride is worth the wait.

Or are they risking their friendship for a fling that could burn them both?

If you love your western romance filled with as much sizzling heat as a summer day in Texas, then this is the story for you. Fans of Lorelei will not be disappointed by the latest print release in her Rough Riders series. The sexual tension between Colt and India has the sparks literally flying off the page. A definite hot read for a long, cold winter’s night.

Her Forever Cowboy by Debra Clopton, Steeple Hill Books.

Part of the men of Mule Hollow series.

ISBN: 978-0373875733

Mule Hollow, Texas, is chock-full of handsome cowboys ready to say "I do." So veterinarian Susan Worth moves in, dreaming of meeting Mr. Right. He's most certainly not the gorgeous rescue worker blazing through town on a motorcycle. Cole Turner is a sixth-generation Mule Hollow rancher, but he's all about roaming Texas to save everyone but himself. The hurt hidden deep inside his heart keeps him from settling down. But Susan is determined—and knows just how—to make him her forever cowboy.

Cole and Susan are two people who have been hurt in the past and are struggling to heal. Both believe they are ready to move forward in life when an accidential encounter early one morning proves that sometimes our ways are not necessarily God’s way. This inspirational western romance grabbed my heart right from the start. The message is heartwarming without being over done. Susan and Cole are two people who could live next door to us and be are best friends. They are people filled with both honor and insecurities. The story is compelling and had me flipping to the final page and then…smiling. Oh, how I love a good western romace. And this is definitely one of them.

Heart of the Hunter by Madeline Baker, Cerridwen Press

ISBN: 978-1419923944

Kelly McBride is torn between two men.

As the owner of a Montana ranch, Kelly is torn between two lovers: a Lakota spirit warrior who guards gold, and his flesh-and-blood descendent. There seems no way possible for Kelly and the ghostly spirit to make a life together.

Lee Roan Horse, an embittered ex-con, descends on the ranch to steal the gold of his ancestors, but finds in Kelly the love of a lifetime that he's afraid to acknowledge. As death comes to claim Kelly, the spirit and Lee form an alliance to protect the woman they both love, one that defies the laws of life and death.

If you like your western romance with just a touch of Native American mystic, then this one’s a keeper. I’d definitely recommend it to take the chill of the winter night away.

Another Killer Moves Excerpt

Buster growled once more, drawing her attention back to the black SUV. Kara was tempted to send him charging after them. Fiercely protective of her and Ava, Buster lived for the hunt.

"It’s okay, boy. I’ll get rid of them for you." Slowly Kara covered the remaining distance to the Suburban that had now stopped in front of her house.

A few yards away from the SUV, she settled into walking again. Kara reached the vehicle just as two men dressed in black suits emerged from out of it. Jeez, could they be more obvious?

Both men glanced up at the house. They weren’t aware of her yet.

"Can I help you?" Startled, they turned quickly around at the sound of her voice, weapons drawn. Even though they were wearing sunglasses, probably Bureau issued, she sensed their uneasiness. They looked hot and tired. Kara smiled. The desert heat had that effect on outsiders.

She recognized the taller of the two right away. Ryan Anderson. She’d worked side by side with him on the Angel case. Ryan and Davis Martin had been best friends since their academy days at Quantico.

"Hello, Kara." Ryan smiled beneath his Bureau-issued sunglasses, which prevented her from seeing his eyes. Not that it mattered. She knew Ryan wouldn’t be happy to see her again, no matter how much he might be smiling.

The other agent, a rookie, appeared shocked by his partner’s recognition. His curious gaze moved from Ryan to Kara.

"You’re wasting your time here, Ryan." Some of his practiced Bureau tactics slipped a little with her answer, but for the moment Ryan chose to ignore Kara’s rudeness entirely.

"Kara, this is my partner, Agent Sean Griffin. Sean, this is the legendary Kara Bryant." Ryan’s expression revealed little but she recognized his sarcasm all too well. Apparently, his partner did not.

Product Warnings

Contains one smokin’ hot FBI agent, a strong-willed psychic heroine who can more than give him a run for his money, and one nasty killer who will keep you up way into the night.

Today is release day for Killer Moves!

What a perfect day for a release! It's Valentine's Day and my baby is now available at Samhain Publishing!
Killer Moves - They’re a match made in the hallowed halls of Quantico. Until Death comes knocking…

Six years ago, Kara Bryant tapped into the mind of a serial killer—and nearly became his last victim. Her FBI colleague and lover, Davis Martin, put the murderer behind bars, then devastated her with his abrupt rejection. Worse, the vivid nightmares that followed her to her desert retreat have recently taken a fresh, frightening turn.

She should have foreseen that Davis would turn up. She’s just not sure her still-broken heart can take the strain.

Davis thought he’d made the right decision for everyone involved in a case that almost ended in disaster, thanks to his mistakes. But with a new string of killings that one by one is taking out the women of his past, suddenly he wonders if he let the real Death Angel get away. Kara is the only one who can help him nail the bastard for good this time—if she can forgive him.

He wasn’t expecting the woman he never stopped loving to love him back. Nor is he prepared to come face-to-face with Kara’s secret. One that raises the stakes impossibly high.

This book has been previously published and has been revised and expanded from its original release.
